THE SECRET.
And so we part, and perchance for ever — The wavelets ripple along the shore, The sun is sinning and we must sever. And smiles must come though the heart be sore. You never will know how I have loved you. And what a sorrowful heart is mine, That yearns with a vain and hopeless anguish. And yet we part, and I make no sign. For what avail should your mind be haunted. By moan of mine with a sad regret 1 Oh, no ! my love is to strong within mo I can bear it bravely, but not forget. I remember all— each word you uttered. Each look unconscious that thrilled my heart* That won you the throne within its tortress, From which, once raised, you can ne'er depart. You take ivway all the smiles I lived on. You take away yourself and the light of life, I know bo well what the future brings me, A dull deep paia and a constant strife. A constant struggle to do my duty, I will not cowardly put it by, For you would spurn me for such base folly — Nay, die in the ranks if I must die ! Farewell ! farewell I I shall bless you daily. You w ill not know it, the moments fly ; And now I clasp your hand— l loose it, And calmly wish you the last good-bye ! IXDA,
