FIRE AT WAITARA.

Waitaba, March 19. Vksterday morning a fire broke out in Shearer's bootsbop, and spread until it de. stroyed, in addition to the building in which it originated, the premises of Spurdlc, blacksmith and wheelwright : Townsend, saddler ; Rendall, draper, and Lawrence. The insurances aro :— £3oo on Townsend's building and stock ; £350 on Shearer's building and stock ; both in the New Zealand Office j £450 on Rendall's building and stock in the Victoria Office. Spurdle was uninsured. Lawrence, Rendall and Townsend saved most of their stock, but the loss by the coniiagration is estimated at £1,000 over the insurances. The fire was fanned by a north-east gale that was raging ; but a number of hands fiom the s.s. Gairloch landed and gave valuable assistance in quenching the flames. The Bouth British Insurance Company has £50 on Townsend's shop and £150 on Shearer's shop ; the Victoria has £300 on Shearer's stock ; the Equitable has £700 (reinsured £250 in the Liverpool and Lancashire) ; the New Zealand has £100 on Lawrence's building, and £200 on Lawrence's stock (re-insured for £150 in the Colonial), £100 on Townsend's building, and £200 on Townsend's stock. The greater portion of the stocks have been saved.
