THE BEST SHOT IN ENGLAND. How Earl do Grey Bagged a Covey of Five Partridges.
Earl de Grey, who was shooting with Colonel Tomaline at StratWn Hall, recently, is reputed to be the best shot in England. It is a curious thing that our crack shots are both Greys, the second Grey being Lord Walsingham, who is very little behind his namesake with the prefix "de." Perhaps the story is not true that Lord de Grey tried to drop a driven partridge down the chimney of his keeper's cottage, and at la*t succeeded, but a really true and still better anecdote of him is related. The writer of it was grouse driving in Yorkshire, and Lord de Grey, past master of the gunnery, was in the next bubt. He had three guns ready for use, and toward him a Small covey of five birds came flying. How to kill the lot was the problem. A brace coming aid a brace going would be easy to such an adept, but the fifth bird would get away. One of the grouse was a bit in advance, and taking a long shot at it, Lord de Grevy killed it, and without using the second barrel, dropped gun No. 1, took up gun ' No. 2, killed two birds cpming, then took up gun No. 3, and killed two birds going. Probably there is no other man in England who would have done it. — " Court Journal."
