Influx of Chinese. Retributive Measures of the South Australian Government. Adelaidr, February 9th.
Tho ExacutiveCouncil had before them today the question of the Chinese in the Northern Territory. It was decided to send to each of the Australian colonies the following telegram: — "lie Chinese question, we have proclaimed the following ports infected : — All ports in China or Chinese dependencies, the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Timor, and Netherlands, India, Quarantine on vessels will accordingly be required at Port Darwin for 21 days alter arrival, except as regards persons not being Chinese arriving by vessels having no disease on board, who will be granted immediate pratique if not from Hongkong. A poll-tax of £10 per head will be imposed, subject to Parliamentary sanction, on all Chinese arriving in thoTerritory, and having left therefor, after March, or being in the Territory and leaving for any part of the Territory more than 200 miles south of Port Darwin. We are causing the above to bo communicated by wire to the authorities of the countries interested, and public notice is now being given affecting the Chinese now in the Territory. We are disposed to consider that the likelihood of any large and iramodiateinflux in to tho Territory, or from thence into other parts of Australia, is considerably over-estimated. Atthesametime wearesatisfied that the above precaution will enable us to deal satisfactorily with any such difficulty should it arise. If, however, any further complications occur, we shall not hesitate to take any additional steps that may be necessary in full reliance on the sympathy and support of our own people and Parliament, as well as of Australians generally."
