Thames* March 12. Government having closed the Thames as a port of entry in consequence of the great decrease in the amount of Customs revenue collected, the Secretary of the Trade and Customs Department has written to the Harbour Board, asking that the Harbourmaster should be appointed a coastwaiter, to act principally in preventing smuggling. Government express their willingness topay Mr Bayidon a small sum annually ta act in that capacity, and the Board will probably consent to his appointment. A few days ago I mentioned that the Harbour Board accepted the tender of Mr William Fergusson, acting on behalf of the Devonport Ferry Company, for the goods I sheds on the Burke-streat and Shortland Wharves.. At the meeting, of the Harbour Board to-day, Mr BL C. GiUespie, agent for the s.s. Rotomahana, wrote re the matter r and the Harbour-master also forwarded a report suggesting that the Board should rescind the motion for the acceptance of the tender, and retain the sheds under the control of the Boards, in view of the probability of the steamers « shortly running from Auckland to this port, i The meetiog is now proceeding. ; ' New Manukau. —Quartz of payablegrade is coming to hand, and some good colours of gold' are observed occasionally whenbreaking down.
