THE THAMES HARBOUR BOARD

A meeting of ratepayers was hdd in the Public Hall, Paeroa,on Saturday 25th ult, for he purpose of considering the best steps to be taken in order to urge the Government to rescind the Proclamation extending the boundary of the Thames Harbour Bnaid, so ns to include- the up country districts ; Mr A; Cassrells in the clmir. After oponing the meeting by explaining th« objonfc of its being con^ venod, tho Chairman railed upon Mr I<\ Cock to address them Mr l'\ Cock stated

that he had convened the meeting at the request of some n£ the ratepayers, and said that before he entered into the business of the evening lie wished the audience to clearly understand that he was not there from any desire to interfere in any wav whatever with the business of the County Council, neither did he intend to take up any hostile position with respect to that body. On the contrary he considered it was the duty of every one amongst them to assist the council, solong as thny administered their duties in a fair and impartial manner. As to the business before the meeting, it appeared 1 hat the council had done their utmost to rid the ratepayers of the iniquitous impost ieferred to { and it now remained for the public to move in the matter, seeing- that it was now nearly five months since they were led to believe that this matter would be satisfactorily settled. In the mean time, however, the Harbour Board were levying black mail on the already overtaxed ratepayers. He believed it only required concerted action on the part of the local residents, to get the impost removed. Ho thought it unnecessary that he should wade through the coirespondenco which had passed between the Government and the Council, neither was it necessary that he should enlaige upon the actions of the Thames Haibour Board, these items had already been before the public, who must be conversant with them. The meeting resulted in a committee being formed of tho following gentlemen : Messrs Phillips, Cassrells, Cock, and Snodgrass, to take such action as they might deem most advisable in the interests of the ratepayers with respect to this matter : —Suppled.
