' The last issue of the " English Racing Calendar*' gives a list of the number of raced of differentdistances run for in Great ßritiaa and Ireland during 1887. They are thus : Five furlongs and under six, 732 ; six furlongs and under one mile, 260 ; one mile, 312 ; over one mile and under two, 183 ; two miles and under three, 53 ; three miles and under four, 7 ; and at 4 miles, 2. This will give some idea of the rage for sprint events, and shows that of 1,549 races no less than 1,304 were run atone mile or less, and 1,487 at distances under two miles. During 1887 the number of two-year-olds running was 908, the threes totalled 523, the fours 290, and thoso five years old and upwards 286,. making a grand total of 2,007. " The Jubilee plunger, Mr Benzon, haB had? another win on the English turf,- Chancery, which he bought a few weeks back, for 300gs, having won the Selling Steeplechaseat Kempton Park. Theve were only two < starters, however, and 100's to 30 were laid on the winner. With a ceitain section of speculators,, backing jockeys' mounts in England is a popular form of gambling. The followers of Fred Archer were legion. But the folly of following any jockey's mount is strikingly shown by a con-espondent of Jthe* London " Sportsman," who proves that lasb season an investment of £10 on each of Wood's mounts would have resulted in a loss of nearly .t'soo ; and Wood, it must be romembciccl, rode the gioate^t number o£ winnors. ,
