Dr Wrights application was again read and discussed at some length. The Chairman remarked the Board wero given distinctly to understand by Government they wero not to pay a Dl 7 when acceding to the Boards request that they might appoint Dr Wright medical officer in connection with the baths. I It was ultimately resolved that a reply j be sent informing Dr Wright that his letter would bo consideied at the next monthly meeting oi! the Board. Music in the Domain . — The matter of providing accommodation for the local Brass Band to play in the Domain was consider*?], the Band having offered to come and play at least one night a week for three months, if the Board would assist by providing rmvnc stands, lights, etc. All the members spoke in favour of assisting tho Band in the direction indicated, and Messrs Wilson and Lipsoy were appointed a committee to make tho necessary arrangements for providing the siandti, etc., (which will be the property of the Board) and selecting bile for their erection. Insurance : — Mr Ahier stated he had renewed the insurance on the various bath buildings. Distribution of Hand Books. — Mr Wilson stated ho had arranged for the distribution of the handbooks in stock ; thoy would be sent to all parts; but fully half of the books ordered had not yet he believed been received from the printer. A Complaint :— Mr Wilson stated that a gentlomei. had come to him with Mr Lip^y tint day, and complained that some p.utic-i bad got tho keys of some of tho prjvat3 baths all tho morning, and refused to give them up ; and he had been thereby gieatly inconvenienced in getting a bath. On going to tbo caretaker be informed them that a Mr how'u Was the person who had the keys, arid th.ifc he told him (tho caretaker) that he had authority to keep them as long as ho liked fiom one of the members, arid he had some friends with him. They instructed the caretaker to abide by the By LawsMr Ahier said:— Mr Lewis was troubled with sciatic, and had complained to him that the caivt.iker objected loathe lencth of time he remained in the baths, which was caused by his medical adviser recommending him to lot the water cnol before u»ir.g it, and he (Mr Ahier) had instinctod that he should be allowed extra time. Mr Lewis told him he would require the bath for an hour. He had a young lady friend with him. Mr Wilson : The paity had four keys and d'3oliuod to give them up, stating they had authoiity to ictain thorn. Mr Lipsoy • When I board about it I thought it about tho most extraordinary arrangement I had ever heard of in my life. That soit of thing < ould not be allowed and others inconvenienced, it would prove injnrions to the place. 'j>csolvcd that tho matter bo left in ths hands of tho chairman to iobtrnct the caretaker. Lawn Tennis Ground: — Some discussion took place re the desirability of funning some rules foi the guidance or! those using tho tennis comt, and fixing a scale of charges for the use thoieof, to provide a fund for replacing rackets, etc., when necessary. Resolved that the Chan man and Mr Ilott be appointed a committee to arrange this matter. Free Baths :— The matter of allowing all cleigymon freo access to the baths was discussed at sninp length. Mr Ilott s.u'd ho would wish tbo resident local clergyman to allowed free baths, but e<H\\d not soo why all tbo^o coming fioin a distance should be granted a similar privilege ; many of them beius? men in receipt of gond stipends, well ablo to pay, and the "additional money thus gained would be veiy acceptable towards the expenses in developing the springs. Many local residents were, in his opinion, not so well abe to aiToid to p.iy as those he 1 of erred to. Mr Wilson said the view ho took of tho matter was that he looked upon all clergymen coming to avail oi the baths as good advertisers, who on their letuin t,o their homes recommended their p-inshioniors to visit Te Aroha, and that in th°t w.vy ie indirectly paid the Board to give them free baths. The Chairman said it was net from the desire to save them, (clergymen) expense he was in favour of tho niesent system ccntinuina:, but as" a mark of lespecttothe clergy. On some of the steamers, they weiVal towed to travel free. A majority appearing in favour of no alteration being made with regard to this matter no resolution was proposed oi 1 further action taken, Bates:— A letter was road from the Clerk of Piako County Council re payment of rates. Resolved thai the opinion of Mr Miller (solicitor) be obtained re tho Boards liability to be rated. Accouuts : Accounts amounting to £12 Is Gd were passed for payment.

Tins year will be one worth watching. It will require no less than 13 letters to express the date in Roman numerals, thus- mdccolx yxviii. This number has never before been needed, and will not be required again for 1000 years. Another peculiarity about it ia that although theie will be (as usual) only 52 weeks, yet there will bo 53 Sundays. Now, literally speaking, this arrangement makes the Sundays fall at the end of each week instead of at the beggining ; because the last wock of this year begins with Sunday and is followed by a Sunday, aiid as two Sundays cannot occur in one week, it is quito clear* that 1888 begins its first week on the Monday. Of course it is owing to this year being leap year that thi3 curious arrangement comes about. Engaged couples will have no complaint to malco about the extra Sunday night being thrown in. Whately once startled his listeners by asking, 'If the devil lost his tail, where would he go to find a now one ?' and without waiting for others to guess replied, ' To a gin palace for bad spirits are re-tailed there.'
