WHANGAMATA.

Since my last report on this district the low levol in the Goldwnter claim Ima been driven through the reef, which proved to bo^ about 4 feet thick, and work is now being nd vanned along its course northwards. Up to the present about 18 feet has been driven in this direction and the lode, carrying both gold and silver in highly remunerative quantities, has main t'lined an avemge thickness of 4 feet for the whole of that distance. On the foot wall side tliere is a belt of ore, about 18 inches in virith, in which gold is very frequently -visablo, and it is from this portion that tlo best ore is now being obtained. A* the result of these operations there is now n considerable tonnage of ore to grass, and this Will shortly be sent to Auckland for treatment Consequent upon the Warden's refusal to grant leases for the large areas of ground marked off hero when the first rush took placo, Mr Lindsay Jackson ia engaged at present in cutting up the different holdings into five acre lots, and when the leases are granted these will be worked us separate claims or amalgamated, and worked conjointly, us circumstances may dictate. Claim owners here are beginning to think that the members of the Thames County Council have forgotten that there is such a place within their dominions, otherwise some attempt would long ere this havo been made to construct a road between the mines and the landing, so that ore could be conveyed from point to point at a gmall cost. It has been slatftd that Government voted a sum of money in aid of this work, and if so why all this delay.
