A Clever Forgery.

A rather clever forgery of a Federal Bank note has just come to light. A £20 note had been so manipulated as to make-it appear a£soone. On the two top corners the amount appears in figures, and over these" were pasted the corners of £50 notes, and over the word " twenty " in the ' body of the note, the word "fifty" is pasted very neatly, but leaving the word '•' twenty " at the back nnoblitetated. Amongst the notes lying at the Federal' Bank have been tound two that bear marks of tampering with. From one the righthand corner has been cut off, and from the other the left, leaving each valid and identifiable. In one of them, moreover, ' the word " fifty " has been cut out and the' space neatly covered with a New South Wales stamp. The theory the Bank holds is that the perpetrator of the swindle passed these notes in New South Wales and those who 1 received them did not notice the deception or else quietly passed them on to * some other unsuspecting recipient. In due course' the £20 note 1 found its way to the head office of the Federal Bank, where the deception was discovered, and the payee found himself £30 poorer than he thought he was. In order to warn the other banks against similar attempts the manager of the Federal Bank has sent round the three notes tampered with for their inspection. • *
