THE MAIL SERVICE.

The Chairman of tho Town Board, on behalf of thnfc body, recently wrote to the Postmaster General, strongly urging the claims Te Aroha had on tho department to subsidise a mail service by coach between To - Aroha and Morrinsvillo, to connect with trains tliat do not run through, to or from that Junction and To Aroha. This week the Chairman received a reply fvom the secretary of the department, in which he states that when the tram service Vfts reduced, the Postmaster General agreed to continue the mnil service as of old, by granting a subsidy of £27 6s Od per annum, " to oonnect with the trains whiich did not ran to and from Te Aroha. It was subseqncntly found that the service would not be undertaken for less than 54 12s Od a year ; a sum tho Postmaster General was not prepared to givo, on account of its being largely in excess of tho probable extra pO3tage receipts that would bo derived. The letter concludes as follows " Mr Gallagher is, I understand at present running his coaches between Te Aroha and Mbrrinsvilla to connect with tho trains which do not run through to Te Aroha ; and as the carrying of mails on those occasions would not involve any extra expense upon him, it is to bo regretted he cannot see his way to moet the wishes of th 3 residents, by accepting the payment which the Government has offerel. lam to a d that the offer is still open, and th 9 Department would be glad to make the desired improvement in the service at tho, cost named."
