NEW YEAR'S MORNING.
Time, with wonted course, to slumber Now has brought another year, Added one moro to the number In the "vast eternal sphere. And a glad New Year is brought üb, Borno on Timers resistless stroam. ? ■ lias the past ycaKwisdom taught us, "*>j Or is life an em^ty dream ? ( - WolTftfo "o-past, ho s taufrh't ,ub plainly How'all things mustT disappear. • And how, we are building vainly— Building castles in the air. When the sun, laat New Year's morning Rose in splendour o'or each land, With his matchless hues adorning Hut and hall, hill, dale and strand, 0, the hopes we fondly cherished, And bright dreams wo then held dear, But, how many of them perished— Perished with the passing year. Closed is many an eye for ever Which beheld that New Year's sun, Ended many a life which never Thought its last year had begun. Many shall, ere thi3 year's closing, Tho' they sit on honour s throne, Bo in the cold grave reposing Lifeless, silent and alone. Life of man is like a flower Blooming in tho early morn, But ere cv c, 'neath sun or shower. Fades, is withered, bruised and torn. But when launched upon life's ocean, Lot us livo for Truth and Right ; Let each storm, each billow's motion Bear us on to clearer light. Let us bxiild on Truth's foundation, Where the building safe can stand, And -unto each man and nation Stretch a lo\ ing brother's hand. Let us be in knowledge growing, Gather wisdom day by day, And whilo this life's stream is flowing Scatter blessings on our way. Let us always do our duty, Como what may « f glee or grief, Whilo our years bring woo or beauty, "Duty " we our motto brief. M, MOXSTEDT.
