Proposed £500 Loan, r le Aroha Riding,— A letter was read from Shafteabury ratepayers protesting against further expenditure ou road to Gordon settlement : A reply was read from Colonial Tr^uror siting no date was fixed yet for receiving applications for loans, and no money was afc present available for loan purposes. The probability of raising a further loan of £500 on Te Aroha riding for expenditure on roa I to Gordon settlement, being very small CrMu'phy withdrew his notice of motion to borrow such sum. Gordon Settler? :— A letter was read from Gordon settlers requesting that some drainage work, and a culvert across the road be mide. It was resolved tho Engineer be requested to report on the proposed work. Aid to Prsspecting.— Mr Jas. Munro wrote asking Council to assist efforts now being made to prospect the ranges. Mr P. Pavitt wrote on behalf of Te Aroha Prospecting Association, requesting Council to aid tho Association, the intention being to drive a tunnel in the direction of the New Find mine, to intersect reefs known to exist, etc. Ci 1 Mills spoke ju support of the application, and gave notice that he should ut next council meeting move that assistance be granted the association. On tho sng^tion of Or Murphy, it was doci led not to deal with MrMunroa application until after Cr MilU motion had been dealt with. Applications to be placed o\\ Roll. — Applications were read from Mr Hunter, manager of Mala ilit;i estate, and from Mr Grant, ma uiger of Larkwoithy's estate, requesting that their names bo placed ou the County 1101 l as representing tho^e properties. Tne Clerk wad instructed fc'> take the neces.-ary ttcps in the nutter. Al'eitUing. — <>u the motion of Cr Gould, beeondod by Cr William*, tlie motion passed »b pievious meeting, .luthoiUing insertion of Connly alverlisemenU in W.iikalo News was rescinded. Fin.inci.il.— A long discussion took place re tho liiuneial position of the. county, and tho absolute necessity of striking a general rate, in order to reduce the overdraft to limit allowed by law at 3 1st, .March. Tho chairman gave notice that he should at next meeting of Council, move that a general rate of J«l in the £ be levied over Matimmta, Waitoa, nn.l Taoto -rua Ridings, and of jd in the £ on Te Aioha and Pateteie Ridings (the extra £d in these Ridings being to provide funds for necessary works, as the Id in £ rate would have to be applied towards reducing overdraft. Seconded by Cr Murphy and carried. Cr Murphy <>-aye notice, that at next meeting ho should move that the meetings of Council be held at Te Aroha. Cr Brunskill gave notice that he should move that standing orders, etc., be framed and adopted for conducting the business of Council. Or Murphy urged that certain works asked for by Gordon settlers bo carried out, and stated his intention to give notice that ho would move that a rate bo struck t'ov tho purpose of providing funds, but eventually decided to let tho matter stand over for the present.
