Lobby Talk. SIR JULIUS VOGEL'S INTENTIONS. Opinions of Members,
The only matter discussed to-day is last nighb's scene in the House. In the lobbies it is fieely reported" thab Sir Julius Vogel Mall nob apologise -but will go before his constituents and denounce the Speaker's partiality. This lacks confirmation at present. On searching the records of the House I find that the only occasion upon which the galleries had been previously cleared was in November, 1871, when this caurse was resorted for the purpose of allowing the Speaker to administer a severe rebuke to the Member for Mount Ida m connection with his contumacious conduct. Mr Mervyn then apologised to the Speaker pei-sonally, expressing rejeot that that gentleman should have thought any conduct of his calculated to lower the dignity of tho occupier of the chair. Sir J. Vogel's supporters are very wi oth at the -ijjhplG affair, and assert that the* Spj9£tk^iiy.\Mas: arbitrary in his action, and b<#uj^£tip&irly in allowing Mr Seclden to accuse Mr 1 Monk of being a talebearer and immediately" afterwards calling Sir Julius to order. It is also asserted that the Speaker was wrong- in naming the member before any motion that his word be taken down. The majority of the Houso, however, appear to concur in the action of the Speaker, and will support him. A livoly debate is expepted to-day.
