Specimens on Exhibition. (From "star" correspondent. ) Hamilton, Sept. 17.

The report of a valuable discovery having been made at Maungatautari has been verified this morning. Many sensational roports are in circulation. In order to place before your readers the true position of the new find, I interviewed one of the party, just returned from the scene of the reported discovery, and he has confirmed the statements made last week, by Charles Hall and Bill O'Weill. Theio men brought in a bag of excellent looking quartz, which was subsequently taken to Auckland by Mr T. G. Sandes. The stone was crushed and the atsay made gave at the rate of over 300 ounces gold and nearly 2000 ounces silver and the assay made gave at the rate of over 300ozs gold and nearly 20000/s silver per ton. Mr Sandes immediately returned to the Waikato and on Sunday morning accompanied by Messrs E. L. Smith and the prospectors started away in a buggy order to get as far through the country as possible during daylight. The party arrived safely at their destination, although tho weather was decidedly against them, and having been shown tho reef commenced operations by breaking out a con siderable portion of the quartz. They were quite satisfied as to the genuineness of tho find, and having filled two bags from tho reef broken into, returned to Hamilton late last night. The stone is very promising and gold is plamly vi&ible < Messrs Smith and Sandes will probably leave for Auckland with a view of having the quartz thoroughly tested. The new find is considered of great importance here. Some t-\\o years ago this same reef was searched for, but in vain, by a prospector named McLean working for a Hamilton syndicate.
