PRESENTATIONS TO MR. AND MRS. W. S. ALIEN.

From the Newcastle Guardian of June 18th, we clip. flu> following portion' of a lengthy report ofa. presentation to Mr and; Mrs W. Shepherd Allen, shortly after their returh homo from visiting theiu Netv Zealand property, Annandale, Piako :— 11 Laßt evening in the Marsh-street Lecture Hall, Newcastle, Mrs W. S, Allen, with members of her family, were entertained to a knife-and-fork tea, the. occasion being also embraced for recognising in a substantial and lasting form Mr Allens long connection with the borough as one of its Parliamentary representatives. The movement originated with Alderman T. P. Heath during the absence of Mr and Mrs Allen on their recent tour to the Australian colonies and America; and it was at once heartily taken up by all classes in the town, and many throughout the. enlarged constituency. The most sanguine anticipations of tho representative committee charged with furthering the pro-, posal have been amply realised. The gif to Mr Allen consists of a silver epergne 18 inches high, nnd weighing nearly 100. ounces. It is exceedingly chaste in design and effective in »ippear»ince, and bears the following suitable inscription :--' Presented to W. S. Allen, Esq., M.A., J.P., D.L., by the electors of the borough of Newcastle" 1 under-Lyme, for his faithful services as their representative for twenty-one years in Parliament. June 17th, 1887 " Accompanying the valuabh ornament is an address, wrought on vellum, and most richly an \ tastefully illuminated. The binding is in black? morooco, with elabo-* rately gilt embellishment, and the exterior of the volume bears the crest and monogram of Mr Ailen and an illuminated copy of the borough seal. The address is signed by Mr Charles Massey, J.R } chairman of. the committee ; Mr H. L. Dixon fc treasurer ; and Mr T. P. Heath, J. P. x lion, secretary ; nnd contains the names of the subscribers, over 200 in number. Tho text warmly congratulates Mr and Mrs Allen on their safe* return from New Zealand, and cordially acknowledges MrAllens services in Parliament during 21 consecutive , years he represented the borough. It observes that although, many changes, both social and political, have taken place in the more than two. decades,. Mr Allen proved himself a steadfast and true friend,"' whose con* stant study it had been to advance theinterests of all bis constituents, irrespective, of political party.; The illuminated volume. is a triumph -of art. The gift to Mra Allen took tlje, appropriate form of. a lady'a dresBing«-case,( with jewel-box,' fitted and mounted, in" solid sliver, and Inscribed as follows : — "Presented to Mrs W. S.
