THE TRIALS OF A SCHOOLMASTER
The following amusing dialogue took place between a (Jeinian .schoolmaster and an incorrigible .scholar, to whom the former was endea\ouiing without avail to illustrate an example in simple addition : — Teacher.— lf you had a stocking on one foot and was to pub it on the other,] how many would you have on ? Scholar. — 1 don't wear stockings at all. Teacher. — But if your father had one pig in the pen and bought another, how many would he lime? Scholar.— We don't feed any pigs. Teacher. — Or if you have one jacket and your grandmother gives you another at Christmas, how many jackets will you have ? Scholar. — She won't give me any. Teacher. — But suppose you have one apple and your mother gives you another, how many will you have ? Scholar. — Our apples are all sour. They oive me the stomach ache. I don't care tor any. Teacher. — You gi\e a poor little beggar a piece of bread, but he aheady has a piece in his pocket, how many pieces will he have ? Scholar.— l eat my bread myself. The teacher, with a .sigh, turns to the next scholar and obtains satisfactory answers.
