The Sydney Unemployed.
The £Tew South Wales Government have finally decided to close the Labour Bureau, and to discontinue the relief works for the unemployed as Soon as possible. It is found that the Labour Bureau has proved very unsatisfactory in ita working, and so many cases of imposition have occurred that the Government have determined that the best course to pursue will be to finally terminate its existence. The relief works of an unproductive character which have been instituted solely for the relief of the unemployed will be discontinued gradually so as not, to cause any unnecessary distress among the men employed among them. A certain number of men will be discharged every fortnight in order to allow these workmen to become gradually absorbed in the ordinary labour market. The works which fire of a really reproductive and remunerative character will of course still be carried on, and the Govornmont will, as far as possible, endeavour to obtain legitimate employment for those out of work, and when necessary will give them assistance to get into the country ; but they are firmly determined not to conbinuo the pauper works, where men are simply employed for the sake of giving them employment.
