Escapees From New Caledonia
The cutter Jessie arrhed in Cooktown from Cape Sidmouth. Her owner, Mr Dillon, informed the police that six weeks ago he picked up five foieignci <« on the mainland near Clerrnonb Island, w lio stated they were shipwrecked sailors fioin a French vessel carrying emigrants to New Guinea. j\lr Dillon took them to his fishing station, undone day two of the men went ashore and walked down the coast. The description ot these men tallies with that of two recently arrested near Cooktown as escapees from New Caledonia. The other three ivcn admit that they escaped from New Caledonia. One was wounded in the aim while escaping. The York Hotel, Adelaide, is said to be making £1,000 a week out of visitors to the Exhibition. Zebeh Pasha, the notorious slave dealer, who has been detained by the Biitish Government at Gibraltar since 18Sn, has now heen released, after signing a guarantee for good behaviour. They have a representative of Bishop Neville's views in Victoria, only he confines himself more to generalities in his cursing <jf the public education system. His name is Archdeacon Slattcry, his habitat Geelong, and he courteously says that the Victorian State schools are not dame schools but damn schools. Dunedin is determined to have a big dock, no matter what it may cost. Loan debentures are to be sold in London at £90. An eminent scientist declares that the world will eventually be converted into water. His theory is supported by the fact that the Sydney Globe is now in liquidation. A few years ago it was thoucht improper for a woman to be a foreign missionary unless she were a missionary's wife. Now there are 2,400 unmarried women in the mission field, besides, px-obubly, an equal number of married ones. Civilisation in Africa ! There are upon the Upper Congo seven steamers, four of which are owned by the Free State, one by France, and two by missionary societies. The fleet will soon be increased by the addition of another Free State steamer and one for Bishop Taylors mi&sion.
