Smallpox in Sydney.

The Secretary to the Board of Health was somewhat surprised this morning when a man presented himself at the- office- of the Board of Health in Maequarie- street, and complained, of being very unwell. The man was carefully examined by Dr. Thompson, who pronounced it to be an undoubted case of smallpox. The patient ga\e his name ns Chailes Alexander, and his age as 21, and from what could be gathered from his some\s hat incoherent remarks, it sterns that he came to the colony as a distressed seaman in the steamship Port Victor from Singapoi c. Tho Port Victor left- Singapoi e on .lime Ist, called at Port Darwin on June 9th. Left there on the 10th and came right on to Sydney, anchoring in Watson's Bay on the night of June 20th at 9 p.m. The next morning the ship and ciew were examined in the usual manner and the ship Inning obtained a clean bill of health, came up to Smith's whart and afterwaul proceeded on her voyage to Melbourne, wheie the vessel now is. Now that the patient is safely quarantined, the next step will be to enUeavoar to find out with whom and where the man has been located since his s tay in Sydney, and this will be a matter of very considerable difficulty if the man is, as he says, a stranger in the colony, combined with the tact that the vessel lias left poit.
