The Abbot ordered the whole establishment fco be purified, that is fumigated. The chaiir the actress sat upon, ithe couch she u&sd and evei*y thing she could possibly have touched, were burned to .ashes and for months every place where her footsteps could have fallen was drenched with holy water. liemorse eventually came to the actress, for after her impious escapade she suffered from bad luck almost as severely as Jackdaw of Rheiras. It cost her several thousand francs and many weary penances before &he obtained absolution from the Archbishop of Paris and in a special epi&tle from the Abbot, whose feelings she had so enraged.
