OHINEMURI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Paeroa, Friday.
At a special committee meeting of the Olimemuri County Council, bold in the County Chambers here on Saturday last, Haslett's tender of £162 10s, bcinir the lowest for the construction of the liailey's tramway, Knrangabake, was accepted, and a start will now b3 made to carry out the work, which is for laying down the permanent way, and providing the necessary rolling stock, when the contractor for the eaithwork will have finished his part of th« businefs, and this should be completed in about ten days time. An Amateur Dramatic Club is now being organised here for the purpose of giving a series of entertainments duvingr the remainder of the winter season ; and '
'A3 some of those who arc; interesting ■ themselve- have had previous experience in such matters, it is expected that tueir I efforts will be attended with success. I The lirsfc performance will be given early in the ensuing month, and as the proceeds aie to bo devoted to the Ohinemuri Public Library Building Fund, it i 9 to be hoped that the amateurs will be greeted by a bumper house. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri Dhtiict School Committee on Satur.lay last, the only bus mess of importance transacted waa that of recommending a full time school for the Karangahake, which it is believed will be established in that locality very shortly. Some time ago Mr Cadman announced his intention of standing again for the Coromandei electorate, and it was thought that he would be likely to have iv walk over for the seat, but I hear that Mr Bridie is likely to come out, and Mr Macky is also spoken of as a probable candidate. These three gentlemen are well known throughout the whole electorate, and should they all come to the the pole, a desperate fight will be the result.
OWIIAROA. Tbi3 district bids fair to come to the front again at an early date. Fanner and party tributers in tlio Smile of Foitune mine Laving dropped across a patch of tho precious metal, which may piove to bo very extensive, and if so, it will give the place a frosh lease oF life. The new discovery, which was made a few d.iys ago, is north of the old workings, and about 50ft bcne.ith the surface. In driving an old cross-cut eastward the tributers intersected a conglomerate mass of sandstone and quartz stringer.*, measuring about 3ft in width, and carrying more or l;ss gold from wall to wall. Some of tho stuff gives up handsome prospects of coarss g"°hl, and the tiibuters consider that it will pay then very good wages for breaking it out with the off chance of getting better stuff as operations aie continued. A fresh start has been made in the " Me and Rowe " claim, where the prospecting cross-cut is now being extended eastward, in the hope of meeting with one or more of the lodes that have already boon opened up on the surface.
WAII-II Ten head of stampers are now employed at the Martha battery in the reduction of quartz from the company's mine, and the amalgam is showing up for a payable return. The bulk of the Stlverton quartz, comprising abouj 100 tons, is now lying at the Martha buttery, where crushing operaiioiib will be started to-morrow, or Monday at latest ; and it should take three figures to repicdont the return. (Jood headway is being made with the drive whirh is m pi ogress from the bottom of the pro-pei'tini; t-hal't in the Union mine. This level is now in about GOft. and it will alo.d 1501 1. of backs on the no 1 roof, which the manager excepts to oncomit.'i' on ever) shift.
