THE NEW FURNACE i»LANT. The continuous wet weather has retarded work veiy considerably in connection with the erection of the building, etc., for the new revolving furnace. The contractor for erecting the building has been employed in making the required sashes and doors, etc., during the past week. The chimney slack is now drawing toward-; completion, and should tine weather prev.iil, the contractor will pro bably finish this pirtion of the work in about, another week. The furnace is exjw'ck'd to anivc by the incoming 'Frisco matl boat, and so soon afterwards as poafaible it will be forwarded to Wiiiorongomai, and the work of erection will be proceeded with at once. WAITOA. Professor Bickorlon, of C.mtorhuiy College, has advised Air. J. B. Smith that he expects to arrive in Auckland on the 30th instant, and will puveed soon afterwards to Waiiiou and spend several days in investigating the gcnoial character and extent of the auriferous deposit recently discovered on Mr. 8m th's property. In anticipation of this visit, Mr. Smith has had nearly the whole of his fnrm prospected more, or less, and a deposit, similar to that from which the various testa repotted were taken, has been discovered at a consider able distance off, and nearer Waitoa river. Mr. Smith is leaving no stone unturned to obtain every possible information with respect to this extensive deposit, and has within the past couple of weeks purchased half the full interest in a very simple process for treating auriferous and argentiferous quartz sand deposit, that was brought under his notice by an old experienced miner, who heard of the deposit referred to. The invention appears to be an ingenious yet simple arrangement, whereby with the aid of .grirviUtion and a stream of water the deposit is forced through layers of quick silver, no motive power whatever being necessary, and when in use the plant is almost automatic in its workings. It is to be hoped the process will bo found suitable for the treatment of the deposit, and this will soon be known by practical lest, as Mr Smith has ordered all the necessary appliances from Messrs Geo. Fraser and Son, Phoenix Foundry and it ia expected these will be on the ground, and the method tested within the next couple of weeks We hear that encouraging prospects have been obtained by panning off from deposit to be found on Messrs Seddon and Larkworthy's properties, which adjoin Mr Smiths land.
