A GAMBLING SYNDICATE.
A colossal system of robbing by means of jprepavecl packs of cards was discovered at the Casino, Monte Carlo, on April 29th. The proprietors' tables have lost largely ; some accounts. &ay to the tune of L 40,000 in two months. Other despatches speak of the affair as "a curious commercial syndicate " formed to fight the tiger on a system. Clerks and markers Avere employed to play mechanically all day long at the three roulette tables exactly as directed, and they astonished the "administration" by their success. The reports from Monte Carlo say some visitors have been playing in excellent luck of late, and large winnings are reported. A young English couple, the husband being a lord, left on April 28th, with a profit of LlO,OOO. They had played for amusement. The umpires implicated in the swindle mentioned •above were arrested on May sth, and tried. The one who dealt the cards was sentenced to 18 months, the others severely reprimanded.
