A numbek of the unemployed proceeded to the office of tho Colonial Secretary, and submitted the following letter : -" Sydney, April 13, 1887. To the Colonial Secretary. Sir, - We, the undersigned representatives of tho bona Jidc section of the unemployed, beg respectfully to make the following statement, in the earnest hope that the Government will speedily take some .steps to provide us with | food until .such time as work may be found tor us. There arc, no doubt, many more in Sydney ; but we can guarantee that this number of persons are absolutely starving. We made an effort, by eamab.sing for food and subscriptions, to iind sustenance for these persons, but the quantity of food we were able to obtain \\ as quite inadequate to supply tho wants of so inanv. Hence we are compelled to apply to the Government to supply us with the means ot obtaining two meals a day ut least for these unfortunate persons until we ■a'e.ibli'to obtain work. We have," &c.
