WESLEYAN CH URCH.
The quarterly meeting of Hie Wesleyan Upper Thames Circuit was held at To Aroha on Wednesday last. Rev. 11. Bull, chairman of the district, provided. The following were also present :—: — Messrs PI. Buttle, nnd J. Pirilhps, senr., (Circuit Stewards), J. Phillips," junr, D. Whitburn, M. Lovell, C. A White, and J. Brnniley. The receipts for the quarter were stated to bo £46 19s lOd ; whilst tho liabilities, (including a deficiency from previous quarter) were set downat £58 17 Bd* It was resolved 'to allocate the deficiency equally between Te Aroha, Waiorongo"mai, si nd Paeroa, the stewards from those places acquiescing 1 , and guaranteeing th& amounts at an early date. The number of church members was repoitcd as being 42. The Circuit Stewards were authorised to provide the liccessary furniture for th& house recently rented for the incoming minister, Rev. Mr Lawry. Some discussion took place with respect to building a parsonage, enlarging the church, etc., also with respect to the advisability of procuring a more central church site ; and the folloAving were appointed a committee to act in this matter: The Minister and Circuit Stewards, Messrs White, Lavery, Devey, Lovell, Roberts and James ; Mr Buttle to be convener. Resolutions expressive of regret at the removal of Rev. Mr Joughin, and of welcome to Rev S. Lawry were passed unanimously ; and the noxt quarterly mctting lixed for that day thirteen weeks.
Soiree and Public Meeting. In the evening a farewell soiree and public meeting was held in the Wesleyan Church. Tea commenced at ha £ past six, and included an abundance of the good things usually found on such occasions, the tables being 1 very tastefully laid out and decorated with flowers. After full justice had been done to the tex provided, the public meeting commenced about 8 o'clock, Mr Hy Buttle, Circuit Steward for Te Aroha, presiding-. N Addresses were given by the following : Rev. Jas. Marshall, who" gave a very 1 u O'ous speech, and causal much merriment by his reference to liev. Mr Joughin's being a native of tho Isle of Man, and also referred in Gomplimentary tbims to him as a fellow Christian worker. Rev H. Bull addressed those assembled at some lent>t!i, and referring to the Rev. S. La wry who was about to come amongst them sd I he had known him for a number of years, and could from personal observation spe.ik of him as an energetic, able, and devoted minister, and urged upon the people the necessity of heartily co-operating with, and strengthening him in his woik. Mr Bultle gave a legume of the business tr.msicted at the quarterly meeting, stited the finances were in a yatW-ietory state and that they expected to start the new ministerial year clear of debt ; expressed regret at Mr Jcmghiu approaching departuie, etc. Presentation to Miss Ct. Maingny. — Rev T. A Joui>hin, on behalf of the members of tho Wesleyan Church, presented to Miss Gertrnd.' Maingay, the following: — A beautiful fhr.il photographic album, cop3 r of revised version of tho Bible, handsomely bound, copy of Sankey's Hymns with music, and I do. Wesleyan Sunday School hymn book. In the album wa» written the following :—": — " Presented to Miss Gertrude Maingay by the members of tho Te Aroha Weslej-an Church, as a small acknowledgementof her valuable and devoted services as organist." In making the presentation, Rev. Mr Joughin spokoin high terms of the assistance the church had received from Miss Maingay in the department of praise. Before the close of the meeting Rpv Mr Jonghin thanked the people generally for their kindness to and co-operation with him during the short time he had been in the circuit, nnd asked them to sustain, and assist the minister about to come amongst them in every possible way. lie also referred to the kindness and courtesy he had invariably received at the hands of the Church of England minister, Row Jas. Marshall, and also to his largo hoartednesß, and true Christian charity. The proceedings were varied by selections of sacred song, and a solo by Rev. Mi* Joughin.
