OHINEMURI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Paeroa, Friday. Last winter the footpaths in this township were in a most disgraceful conlition, and though the titno is near at hand when the wet season will again be upon us, nothing whatever is being done towards their improvement. The local bo ly derives considc'Mblu revenue from the hotels alone, and this is a matter which is certainly deserving of so.ue consideration at its hands.
KARANGAIIAKE. The late returns from the different mines in this district has hud the effect of attracting the attention of t!ie outside public, and during the wei'k we have been favoured by a goo 1 number of visitors who exprtss themselves as being well satisGed witli the prospects of tins place. Amongst of.hors I noticed gentleman named MuC mdlisli, who, it is stated, is here for the purpose of inspecting the mines oa behalf of an English company, with a view to the introduction of capital, provided arrangements can be made for its investment. Several mines are mentioned as being likely to have terms offered to them, but as yet nothing of a definite nature has transpired, and mine-owners are on the tip-toe of expectation regarding the opinions that may have been, formed of their respective properties. Crushing operations for the Diamond mine was started at Hailey's plant this morning. The parcel to be treated amounts to about 25 tons, and a handsome return is expected. Hogg and party, tributers in the Kenil worth mine, have bagged a 10-ton parcel of quaitz ready for transit to JRailey's Buttery, and, should this lot prove payable, there is an abundance of the same class of stuff ready for breaking out. In the Woodstock mine, Haslett and party, tributers, are breaking out stone in which there is a fair sprinkling of gold visible ; and <hey should be able to make very good wages out of their venture. Heiteman and party, iributers in the same mine, are driving a new level to intersect No. 1 reef, at a depth of 50ft beneath the outcrop.
WAIHI. Since work was resumed in the Martha mine stone of first-class quality has been obtained from the block beneath the floor of the main level, and this is shaping for a good return at the battery where 10 head of stampers are now running full time upon it. Brown and party, tvibuters in the same, are also keeping 10 head of stampers going upon crushing dirt from their section, and the stuff is shaping for a remunerative return. The winze which has been under , way in the Silverton mine for some time past is n>w down to a depth of 54ft under the low level tunnel, and, so far, the country is all that can be desired for mining purposes, and there is but little or no! water to impede the progress of the work. The reef here is being broken out to a width of fully 4ft, without any sign of the other wall ; and afc every breaking down of quartz the precious metal is freely, visible. During the past two months work in the Union mine has been confined to opening up the block_ of- ground which lies between the Qonipanyjs' intermediate 1 * workings and the liosemont low lerel
tunnel. This lias been accomplished 'by means of a winze which will be -useful for ventilation, purposes, and will also serve as a basis for stoping operations. At this point the reef measures fully 4fb in thickness, and the stone is all of good quality.-; 4 Samples of- ore from, the Rosomont mine haye 1 been sent' to Fiaser's battery at Waioron£omai. where they sire bein* subjected to special treatment by an expert from California named Williams, who will doubtless make known the result of his experiments during the early part of ensuing week. Mr E. K. Cooper, who has had a large area of ground in his occupation for some time past, has also taken up a machine and water light, and it is rumoured that he intends visiting England for the purpose of floating the whole concern on the London Stock Exchange.
OWHAROA. There is a revival in mining matters here, and indications are not wanting, that things generally have taken a turn for the better with every prospect of further improvement very shortly. Of late several new claims have been taken up here, and upon two of these active prospecting operations are now in progress for the purpose of intersecting one or more of the gold-bearing lodes that are known to trend through the ground in. question. Hitherto, the great drawback to success in mining operations here, has I been the want of capital to carry on the work systematically, but it is said that the parties who are now interested in the ground have got the requisite sinews of war at their command, and that they are determined upon giving the place a thorough prospecting let the cost be what it may, in the full belief that the results will be satisfactory.
WAITE KAURI, The party who liavo taken the Maungakara mine and battery on tribute are now ti eating a large parcel of quartz, which is sharing for a payable return. In the Waitekauri mine, Hollis and party, tributers, have got several hundreds of tons of quartz broken out, and this is now being dealt with at the batlery, where it is shaping for a highly remunerative return.
