Invisible Defences.
Sir Andrew Clarke, formerly InspectorGeneral of Fortifications, and one of tho highe&t authorities on coast defences in Eogland, suggests a novel system of coosk defences. Instead of alleged invul norubility, his piinciple is the invisibility of the defences. He would nave each gun occupy a hole in the ground, and would raise it tor action by a hydraulic contrivance. After firing it would sink into the pit again to bo reloaded, so it would bo expobed only for a few secondn. Thu* the locality of the pit, could not be exactly determined, and the eueray would have practically nothing to aim at.
