A Niagara Sensation.
The Chicago "Times " Niagara Falls special of January 13th cays : That portion of the rugged bans nearest the Horseshoe falls, on the Canada side, and known as "Upper Table Rock," fell at midnight last night with a deafening crash that was heard and the concussion felt milee away. Thousands of tons of solid rock fell into the gorge below and with it hundreds of tons of ice. The exact position of the break is between the Prospect Ho»ee and the Great horsethoe falls, juet above the old table rock and next to the spiral stairway leading to the path behind the sheet of water. The Government's iron railing for over 150 feet was carried away. It is at this very spot that all visitors Btand to ges a view The formation of tha precipice is now entirely changed. One can now stand on the bank above and see behind the heavy sheet of water into the dark chasm. The greatest curiosity is manifested by villagers and tourists, and throngs of people are moving to the spot. &. mass of limestone and eiate 100 feot in length by about 60 feet in width and 170 feet de»p is piled in a heaping mass bolow. The suppoeod ciuse of the rock giving way is low water, steady freezing weather for the laat three weeks, and the heavy weight of accumulated ice.
