An Imperial Institute.

A meeting 1 was held in St. James' Palace January 12th, of gentlemen interested, in <ihe promotion ol the establishment of an imperial institute. The Prince of Wales presided. A resolution was passed declaring that an imperial institute would be a fitting memorial of the Queen's jubilee,

and directing that the people of the Queen's dominions shall be appealed to for . funds [to support And maintain euch an institute. A meetng was held at the Mansion House after the adjournment of St. James' Palace meeting. Many distinguished persons attended, among the more conspicuous being Earle Granville, the Marquia of Lnrne, Sir Farrer Horschell, Baron Rothschild, Attorney-General James, Mr Goßchen and Professor Huxley, The meeting adopted a resolution declaring that in recognition of the blessings enjoyed by the English people " during her Majesty s presence on the throne a memorial should be erected by voluntary contributions from British subjects throughout the empire's dominions. The meeting approved as the form of memorial to be adopted the Imperiul Institute, recommended by the Prince of Wales, on plans suggested by him. A remarkable incident of the meeting was the reading of a telegram from the Earl of Iddesleigh, in reply to the Committee's invitation to attend the meeting, apologising for his intended absence, which he paid was necessary on account of indisposition.
