The long drought has been rather disasterous in its results so far as the root crops in this immediate neighbourhood are concerned. This is especially the case with regard to potatoes, which, on the up lands, will be a very light crop. At Bangiora, the crops generally are in a flourishing condition, and this is accounted for by the fact that the stiff clay subsoil characteristic of that locality retains sufficient moisture to thoroughly mature both root and cerial crops without much rain in the summer. Miss E. Akers, of the Thames, who has been appointed assistant pupil teacher at the Paeroa public school, vice Mr Simmonds, resigned, assumed her duties on Monday morning: last. The contractor for forming and metall- ' Sng that section 6t the main road between Mackay town and McCl6ughry,s clearing, t has started operations, and will complete ] his work early next month. ! Mr F. Pavitt, County Engineer has | been engaged during the past week in i making a survey, taking levels, etc., for i the proposed tramway to connect Bailey's ' jalant with the County track, and it is stated that the Council intend pushing on with the work of construction without further delay.
