ATHLETIC AND SPORTING NEWS.
William Beach left for Australia on October 16. The "London Sportsman*" announced that Beach intended to retire into private life. He is said to have made £10,000 during his sculling career. Late despatches from the Eastern States and Europe pay that a number of athletes are preparing to start for the sporting goldfields of Australia. Fighters, wrestlers, eprinters, oarsmen, and cricketers will bo represented. Matthews, who recently left London for the colonies, proposes to get) together a team of cricketers to meet the Australian Eleven on their return from England. John L. Sullivan, the, American champion boxer, is threatening; Australia with a visit, and Hutchens,John* son, and other fast sprintera have deter* mined to crosa the ocean and try conclusions with Malone. With the exception of Donald Dinuie, who, it is said, ha 3 made considerable money in wrestling and athletic sports, the American contingent of athletes have fared but poorly in Australia.
