ARRIVAL OF 'FRISCO MAIL. Auckland, last night.
The steamship Maiaroa A'itli the 'Frisco mails arrived at five o'clock, baring accomplished the fastest passage on record. Government have stopped the issue of free passes to convoy unemployed to country districts, complaints having been made that tramps were availing themselves of the permits. John Livesey, a young man who was recently carrying on business as commission agent in Auckland, was charged at the Police Court to-day with the forgery of cheques on the Bnnk of Niw Zealand amounting in aggregate to about £650 with intent to defraud one Frank William Foley. After hearing* evidence, prisoner was committed for trial. Good progress was made with the expert witnesses to-day in the fimaru poisoning case, and it is now possible, although by no means certain, that the case for the Crown will be closed to-morrow afternoon.
