KARANGAHAKE. THE SMELTER.

Woodstock. — This company's furnace shut down on Saturday morning last after a very successful run of four days during which time 28 tons of quartz were passed through the Smelter. The return from this was 600 ounces of melted bullion of which the essay value is not as yet generally known, but it is not considered to be of very high value on account of the* large percentage of silver centained therein. At the mine good stone is coming to hand from the stopes as well as from the winze gping down beneath the low level. The reef here has been sunk upon to a depth of 20 feet, and it appears to improve in quality going downwards sixteen head of stampers are running full time in the reduction of second class quartz which is shaping for an all round return of one ounce per ton.
