(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Paeroa, Friday* Avriiouaii tliis place has now been in. the occupation of Euvopeans ror tho last eleven years very little substantial progress has been nqads either in the townships or its environs. This is noli as it should be, for the district embraces' all the elements necessary to success, via : Navigable rivers, good soil, with an abundance of timber, and mineral wealth 171 the back country. Ifc is not necessary to go to seek a reason for this absence of anything approach* ing satisfactory progress, which may bo attributed to the fact the cream oE the land ia still in the hands of the natives who are so hedged around by "red tapeism," as to be debarred from letting, soil ing, or dealing with it in any way whatever, and yet, as the ca^e now 'sfcunds, they derit'o little or no benefit from it. This is especially the case yhMi regard to the Paeroa co.vnship> of whioli tUc lefi&o expires four vea/s hence and repeated .applications have been made to go\ eminent to have the land thrown open for purchase, or elso such arrangements made, as would enable the present occupiers to got an extension of their term. Next week Mr Commissioner Barton is expected hero to'enquire into and report to government upon this much vexed .jncstion, and it in to We hoped that tiie sequel will bo satisfactory to all concerned At a meeting of tho Ohinemnri School Committee, held on Wednesday, the members were unanimous in their expressions of regret upon learning that Mrs Sullivan had decided to resign her position as assistant teacher to the Paeroa school. It was decided to notify Mrs Kennedy, sewing mistress to the Owharoa, Mackaytown, and Waitekauri schools, that she must attend to her duties on the days specified by the committee, or otherwise her services would dispensed with.
