The Earthquake of 1854.
The appalling catastrophe that occurred at the Lake Distriqt this morning is the most dreadful eruption that has yet occurred in the history of New Zealand —at anyrate within the memory of Europeans. T,he- last earthquake of any consequence occurred in 1854, when many buddings were damaged at Wellington, and when thirty - three reports as though of the loudest artillery were heard at Cook's Strait. The tremblings ■of the ground extended for a radius of thirty miles, and immense rents were made in the ground. Colonel Wilson, of Cambridge, who was in Wellington in 1847, Btates that there were 247 distinct shocks of earthquake in one single night. At Marlborough some mud houses were thrown down by the earthquake.
