The Volcanic Fire seen at Pukekohe.
Guard Elliott of the train which arrived from Mercer this morning, reports that about three o'clock this morning while in bed .he heard a loud rumbling noise as though of distant artillery and felt the house shake as though with an earthquake. At the stations between Mercer and Auckland the # same noises were heard and the stationmaster at Pukekohe informed him that he, during the night, observed what he thought to be rockets in the sky to the southward. No doubt these were the volcanic fires.
. Insurance Risks. Many of the companies doing business in New Zealand have the following, clause in their policies, "No liability for loss or damage by' earthquake or hurricane, and policies shall remain suspended, and be of no effect during the period of these contingencies." , There does not appear to be any clause exempting liability in the case of datnage by volcanic agency.
