Great Loss of Life at Wairoa. The Schoolmaster and Family Killed.
The next despatch from Taurauga stated :—": — " Several lives are reported to be lost at Wairoa, the scene of the eruption. There is intense excitement. People have been leaving here for Tauranga since midninght. The Hazard family, the schoolmaster at Wairoa and Rotomahana, is reported to have been blown up and perished. The schoolmaster's house is buried to the eaves in blue mud. Relief parties are being organised here to go to the assistance of the Rotorua people, who are in a complete state of panic. Telegraphic communication is interrupted between Opotiki and Whakatane. From 12 to 20 persons are reported to have been killed at Wairoa. Mr Hazard who is related to the Morpeths of Ponsonby has been teacher of the Wairoa Native School for a number of years. He is a very estimable man and highly respected in the district.
