OHINEMURI BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
The following is a copy the petition referred to in our last issue :—: — To His Excellency the Hon. Sir W. J. D. Jervoie, etc., etc., Governor-in-Chief of the Colony of New Zealand. — From the Chairman, Councillors, and Ratepayers of the County of Ohinemuri, District of Thames, Provincial District of Auckland. — In accordance with the provisions i».nd in terms of <r The Counties Act Amendment Act, 1883,." sections 51 and 52. Humbly sheweth. — That firstly, it has been deemed expedient that the county council should have the control of the rivers within the county boundary, namely, the Ohinemuri, "Wnihou, Waitoa, and Hikutaia rivers in order to have the power to dredge, snag 1 , reclaim the banks of, and otherwise conserve said rivers, which your petitioners humbly submit is highly necessary for the furtherance of commerce and the general commonweal. Secondly : Your petitioners further urge that the local body should have control of the wharves, bridges, &c, which are now being periodically constructed on these rivers ; also the power to regulate the removal of sand, shingle, &c, for ballast, which is now being continually done by masters of steamers and other vessels plying on said rivers ; also, that the said local body should be legally enabled to levy tolls, wharfage dues, and river rates where necessary, in order that the ordinary revenue of the county be nob diverted to the maintenance of river works. Thirdly : In furthanee of this petition, and in accordance with the Act of General Assembly hereinbefore mentioned and quoted, the following resolution was passed at an ordinary general meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, holden at the county offices^ Paeroa, on Saturday, the thirteenth day of M.trch, 1886 : Resolved, " That this council do take the necessary stej^s in order to be invested with the powers of a River Conservancy Board, in accordance with the Acts relating to same." And your petitioners, etc.
