AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (Per s s. Tarawera) Serious Railway Accident. EXCURSION TRAIN IN COLLISIONMANY PERSONS HURT.
At Bowral, N.S.W, a serious railway accident occurred on Saturday, Bth inst. The No. 7 down tourist train from Sydney, which left Red fern at 8.30 a.m., and an up goods train, drawn by No. 44 engine, ran into each other at a spot 300 yards north of Bowral station. The good train was shunting, and the driver train saw the tourist train approaching, and tried to get his train off the main line, so as to allow the tourist train to pass, but the load on the goods train was too heavy to be shunted back on to the loop line in time, and the engine of the tourist train came into collision with the engine of the goods train. The locomotive of the tourist train lifted the engine of the latter,and threw the tender off the line. One of the goods trucks was capsized, and this threw several other trucks off the rails. Two carriages of tbe passenger train telescoped, and the following passengers were injured:— Mrs Hannaford, Crown Road, Ultimo, spinal injury, very serious ; Mr A. Stone, Braid- ! wood, fractured jaw, and also several abrasions; Mr Maine, Gipp-street, Pad-, dington, injuries to the knee and head | Mies Ada Ferguson, injury to the head * Major Pollard, of the Salvation Army, injuries to the head and leg ; Thomas Sheridan, injuries to the hip and head ; William Hopson, Bowral, injury to the knee; Miss Ivy Boyd, abrasion on the head ; Mr Evan°, of Darlington, injuries to the head and neck (only slightly hurt); Hamilton Osborne, injury to the spine ; Anne Bollhouee, three j ears old, cut head ; Thomas Turner, fireman of engine 349, attached to the tourist train, cut head, dislocated thumb, and broken finger ; Thos. Sheriden, contusions on the back ani hip. Immediately the news of the accident was received in Sydney a special train, with a gang of men to clear the line, and Dr. Ray, was despatched from Gculburn. The injured were attended to by him and the local medical practitioner, Dr. Newmarch. The traific manager and Dr. Woodward, of the Bailway Medical Board, left Sydney for Bowral on Sunday night. Tne Commissioner for Railways has appointed a board to investigate into the cau«o which led to the accident Major Pollard, who will be remembered by many fn New Zealand, was on a visit to the country districts to further the interests of the Salvation Army.
