FRANCE AND THE VATICAN. Their Relations Again Strained Almost to the Snapping Point.
A Rome ? pecial says : The relation? between France and the Vatican are again strained to the snapping point, and at any moment one or the other may lake a position which will at least temporarily put a stop to diplomatic intercourse. Since he assumed office M.de Freycinet has been yielding to the pressure put upon him by the Radical advocates of the separation of Church and State in Franco. The vexations to which the Catholic Church is exposed in France imve embittered the smoulderiug resontment of the Vatican, and the ill-feeling has been fanned by the Pope's pro-German and Italian counsellors On the other hand, the French Government has taken offence at the projected change of relations between France and China. Pope Leo has juet resolved to treat directly with the Celestial Empire in future with regard to all questions affecting Catholics in China, and to withdraw the privilege of protecting Chinese missions from France. The Papal decision ia not yet officially notified to France, but in anticipation of the mpture it i 3 reported that M. de Freycinefc has sent Lef6bvre Debshaine, French Ambassador at the Vatican, lettei'3 of recall for production at the fitting moment.
