WAIHI.

Union. — Cleaning 1 up the firsfc parcel of 34 tons, put through the Martha battery for the owners of this mine, eventuated on Wednesday last, the result being 50 ounces of retorted gold. The assay value of the tailings ol the abovementioned lot showed an average loss -of £4 14s. per ton, and then the float loss, of which, as a matter of course, no account can be given, musfc have been considerable. Silveuton. — On Monday last 500lbs weight of picked stone from this mine were treated in the Martha battery by the ordinary process, and the result ia hard squeezed amalgam was 112 ounces, which the manager estimated to be worth 35 ounces of retorted gold. In this case the tailings have all been saved, and in all probability will be subjected to the smelting process. The gold in this stone is so extremely fine as torender it impossible to save even a moderate percentage of it by any process of which water running down an inclined plane is the principle factor. Mr. Montgomery's School of Mines' requisites arrived here yesterday, and' that gentleman is expected to arrive tomorrow, when experimental class work will be commenced in the old Martha battery house.
