["AGE" SPECIALS.]
London, April 12.— Tho adoption of a scheme for laying a cable from Vancouver Island, off the coast of British Columbia, to Auckland, will depend upon the Australian colonios agreeing to pay a subsidy to the cable. The projectors of the schomo will not accept the proposal that the colonies should merely guarantee certain revenue from the cable business. Earl Granvillo has intimated that he will await the receipt of a statement from Sir Arthur Gordon, the present Governor of Ceylon, with rogard to the aspordons which tho latter ia alleged to havo cast upon the character of Mr John Bryce, befoio considering whether His Excellency is deserving of censure. In tho Houso of Commons yesterday, sympathetic reference was made from both sides of tho House to tho death of tho lion. W.E.Forster.Froin tho Government benches the Premier alluded to the event, and passed a high euology on the deceased member, whilst from the Opposition side a high sense of the merits of tho deceased statesman was expressed by Sir Michael Hicks Beach. The prosecution of Bov. W. Dyson, I Wcaloyan clergyman, who was placed on trial with Mrs Adelaide Bartlott for alleged murder on New Voar's Eve by chloroform of her husband, at Piinlico, has been abandoned. Tho negotiations which have recently be&n in progress between the French and English Government rolative to tho pro po?als for the annexation of tho Now Hebrides have been temporarily suspended at tho desire of tho English Government, in order that tho Australian colonies may havean opportunity of arriving unanimously at an agreement as to the course that they desu-o should be pursued in tho matter. Sir A. Clarke, who is acting as AgentGeneral pending the arrival of Mr Graham Berry, ia strongly opposing the proposal for the cession of the New Hebrides to France. George Perkins, tho well-known English Oarsman, has offered to make a match with Neill Mattorson, of New South Wales, on condition that tho latter will concede him a handicap. A Committee is sitting at tho War Ollico for tho purpose of considering the military aii'airs of the colonies. It is probablo that the Agents-General will bo oxamined as witnesses. Mr Goodwin was examined on Saturday. Admiral Baron Do Schlountz, who has been appointed to tho position of Governor of the German possessions in New Guinea, has sailed for Brisbane en route for New Guinea, by tho British India Company s Dorunda. Tho Privy Council has given a decision in the case refened to it by tho (Queensland Legislatuie, the point involved in which was as to whether the Legislative Council has power to alter a monoy bill. Tho Privy Council holds that tho Legislative Council has no such power. It is probable that the Princo of Walc3 will shortly pay an informal visit to tho Colonial Exhibition. Tho work of preparing the Australian Court is proceeding slowly, and it is impossible that tho arrangoments can be fully completed by tho dato tixed for the opening of the Exhibition in May.
