Relief of Bereaved Families
Ditnedtn, April 10. The Mayor to-day received a deputation to whom he promised that ho would convene a public meeting for the purpose of raising subscriptions for the relief of the families of those lost in the Taiaroa. Wellington, April 16. The Government have decided to pay Mrs Ward, widow of the Torpedo instructor who was di owned at tho Avreck of the Taiaroa, £200, equal to a year's salary, and to find suitablo employment for her eldest son, aged 16. *»

Sir, — It might be interesting to his friends in Auckland mid elsewhero to know that Sergeant Grant, who saved himself in the Tairoa disaster, was lately an officer in tho British Navy, and visited this port in the Basaiask. He also served with distinction in the Ashantic war, and was also a nophew of the late Governor Hobson, and is well-known by many friends in Auckland, — Yours truly, Frederick Charles Richardson.
