London, Mar. 18 — A demonstration of the unemployed took place at Manchester, and threatened to prove of a serious nature. As it was, some windows were broken, but the prompt action of the police prevented any pillage in the shops or houses. T Hibbert, Under- Hecretary to the Admiralty, in moving the estimates, announced that twenty armouied and twenty-five unarmoured vesools and fifcy-four torpedo boats were in course of construction for the the British navy. The motion tabled by Mr Henniker Heaton in the House of Commons, to the efl'ect that the Colonial forces should be placed under the control of the War Office, and should receive similar rights and privileges to tho Imperial forces, has boen postponed until after the result of the conferonce in Melbourne on the same question shall bo made known. Sir John H. Kennaway, Bart., and Mr. A. W. Alderson havo been appointed directors of the Bank of South Australia. London, March 21. - Mr Henry Richard, M. L J . for Merthyr Tydvil, brought forward a motion condemning declarations of war, or completion of treaties, or annexation ot foreign territory, without the pievious sanction ot Parliament. On a division being taken, the motion was rejected by a majority of six. In the House of Lords a measure was agreed to providing for Sunday opening of public museums and picture gallerie3. Air W. r)ymock, of Dunedin, who at present is Inspector-General of the National Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed general manager of the bank. Information has been received from Madeira that the shipment of herring ova for New Zealand by the s.s. Ruapehu is a failure. It is not at all unlikely that the Treasury, on grounds of economy, will ratify the concession proposed to be made to the Imperial naval and military officers accepting colonial appointments. The Victorian fruit by the steamer Valetta has arrived in excellent condition, except that tho packing of the grapes in sawdust has somewhat impaired their valuo. It is said that Lord Roseberry's protest against the sending of recidivistes to New Caledonia has had the efl'ect of preventing any immediate shipments being made. London, March 22. —Wallace Ross has issued a rowing challenge to Hanlan and Mathieson. It has been decided that the steamers of the new German-Austrian line will proceed to Brisbane. The service commences on July Uth. A force of military are at present at Liege for the purpose of protecting tho town against any further outrages on the part of Socialists, London, March 22.— The resignations of Messrs Chamberlain and Trevelyan have not been withdrawn. Mr John Bright is now attempting to heal the split in the Ministiy.
