France and the New Hebrides. Combined Colonial Protest. [REUEER'S TELEGRAM.] Melbourne, March 23.
At the instance ot the Hon. Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, the Governments of all the Australian colonies have telegraphed to their respective Agents-General requesting them to take joint action urging the Imperial Government to prevent the annexation of the New Hebrides by France. London, March 11.— It is reported that the Government of France have communicated with the English Government, intimating their de&ire to annex the New Hebrides, and asking to be released from the agreement entered into between France and England, under which both nations bound themselves to respect the independence of the Islands in question. The French Government, on their part, promise that if acquiescence begiven to this request, they will not transport recidivistes to the Islands.
