SYDNEY NEWS. (SPECIAL DESPATCH.— BY TELEGRAPLH.) Sydney, March 17.

Distress Among the Working Classes. Oveu 2,000 men are out of employment, and the Government are doing their best to relieve them. To-day they found employment for 50 in the country districts at 5a 6d a-day.

A Stormy Voyage from Auckland. The schooner Louis Montgomery, from Auckland, arrived at Newcastle, having sustained considerable damage. The captain reports that lie experienced a rough voyage. The vessel left Auckland on February 21st, and experienced heavy squalls. But all went well till two o'clock on March 1st, when the vessel was struck by a heavy squall and knocked on her beam ends. The crew were quickly on deck, and attempted to cut ! away the lanyard's fore rigging, but before this could be done the mainmast went over the side of the vessel, breaking off 12 teeb above deck and taking with it the jibboom maintop mast, also the bowsprit and tackle. It was found necessary to cut away the remnant of the mast A jury mast was rigged on the following day. The crew worked well all through.

Shipping Notes. The s.s. Alameda made the passage in four days. Sho is now in dock, and leaves here full of passengers. The Australia, with 600 passengers, the largest number that ever left the colony in one steamer, Hails for Melbourne on Saturday with several Auckland passengers, including Messrs Bowring and Hewin. The ketch Result, from Auckland, reached Sydney safely in 17 days. The barque Alexa, recently purchased in London by C. A. Harris, jun.. and Captain Robertson, formerly of tho old Moa, has arrived in Sydney, and goes on to Auckland via Newcastle with a poition of her original cargo from London and Mauritius.

Aucklanders in Sydney. Judge Gillies and several other Aucklanders are now doing: Sydney. There are now nine English war ships in Sydney harbours, including the Nelson.
