Silverton — Since Saturday last the manager of this mine has o1o 1 fcained about lOulbs uf specimen stone from the bottom of the winze, which is now down to a depth of 52ft, and there is every prospect of the run of gold continuing 1 downw.-.rds. This vr'mz>- is being sunk upon the hanging wall of tne cross lode, which is being broken out to a width of two feet, and the whole (.f the stone obtained therefrom, is of good quality. Yesterday semi tons of general quartz from this mine wore despatched to the smelting works Thames, p« d.s. Kotuku, and, should this stuff prove to be remunerative, there is a large tonnage of the some class ready for transit. Union. — Sinking from the surface -trench is now in progress, and the reef here measuring 4ft in thickness is all composed of good stone, some of which is showing the precic us metal pretty freely. In the low level the reef is not yet to hand, but the manager expects to •neet with it daily. Rosemont. — The prospectors of this mine have now got all the material on the ground necessary for the work of extending the low level tunnel, which will have to be diiven a distance of 500 ft before it reaches under the present workings, at which point upon the leef it will afford 95ft of backs. bellow Jacket. — Lockwoo " and party proprietor of this mine, have been engaged in the work of prospecting for some time past, and have succeeded in unearthing a large reef, which they believe to ne identical with the one upon which work is now being carried on in the Silverton mine, and the stone broken out looks as if it W3uld carry both gold and silver in payable quantities. Nil Desperandum. — Work in this claim was resumed on Tuesday last, when a start was made to drive a low level, with a view to intersect one or other of the many reefs which are known to traverse the company's ground. Martha Extended. —The manager has Inon ablo to keep twenty head of stampers running, and the crushing is shaping for a payable return. Several new claims have been taken up in this locality lately, and it is to be hoped that the owners will make an effort to develope them, and not hold them for speculative purposes, as has been the case rather too often in the past.
