Every shift when breaking down the reef a few pounds of rich stone are obtained, and the manager has now got a candle bo* full of pieces of quartz, which might fairly be classed as specimens. Although the country in the low leVel in the Union mine is somewhat right at present, fair headway is being made with the work of extension, and the manager expects a change for the better as the lerel approaches the line of reef, upon which it will give fully 60 feet of backs. Breaking out quartz from the reef at the surface workings U ami iv piogicsa, and a considerable proportion of the atone coming to hand shows strong colours of the precious metal This stone is now being classed, bagged, and forwarded by dray to Paeroa, and thence on to the smelting works, Thames, the first parcel sent down assayed ot the rate of £17 10 per ton.
