RIOTS IN LEICESTER. SEVERAL FACTORIES SACKED. Loondon, February 12.
The operatives employed in the hosiery factories gathered at Leicester are out on striko. Since yesterday, tho town has been the scene'of riotous proceedings. The mob of operatives paraded tho town, smashing windows of the factory proprietors and other persons who were obnoxious to them. They then proceeded to wreck factories.a quantity of valuable machinery being destroyed. The police were totally unable to cope with the outbreak, and a large number of students were obliged to be sworn in as special constables. Londov, February 12. — The panic caused by the recent outrages has now in a great measure subsided, and business has been resumed in the usual course. There has been serious rioting in the f own of Leicester.
Meeting of Unemployed Prevented. London, February 13. — It wa& intended to hold another meeting of the unemployed in Hyde Park to-day, but the display of force on the part of the police provented the gathering. An inquiry is to be held into the riots last week, and the failure of the police to suppress the outbreak. Summonses have been issued against the Socialist leadei'3, returnable at Bow-street on Wednesday next, the 17th inst. London, February 15.— Hyneman, Burns, Champion, and Williams, the leaders at tho meeting of the unemployed, have been summoned to appear at Bow-street to answer a charge of uttering seditious speeches in Trafalgar Square on Monday last. Rioting at Leicester has ceased, and the town is now quiet. ' Tho Socialists intend to hold a meeting in Hyde Park on Sunday next. London, February 16. — Her Majesty has sent a donation of £500 to the fund which is being raised for the unemployed in 1 London. The labour agitation is spreading in England, and serious riots ol the unemployed have taken place in Birmingham and Yarmouth. In both instances, however, the police authorities proved equal to the occasion, and succeeded in speedily quelling the outbreak.
